Orphan ambition By Jacob Page Blenheim man Royce Elliott believes he was given advantages in life growing up as an orphan. The 83-year-old charted his life in Wesley Home for Girls orphanage and beyond in a book called The Glass Jar. Royce was sent there at the age of three, following the death of his parents. “I’ve lived a number of different lives… I wouldn’t mind a couple more to be honest just to do a few more things.”

A life well lived from humble beginnings for Royce Continued from page 1 Royce became a vet and then worked as an advisor for various Government departments including overhauling dairy procedures, fishing quotas and being at the forefront of microbiology. Both his parents were English but died of health issues while Royce was a toddler. He still has his father’s Boer War uniform and a portrait of him hangs in his sun room. Royce was the youngest of seven children and he and his youngest sister were put in an orphanage together. “My siblings didn’t want to put us
in the orphanage, I feel they had a lot of guilt but my older brother and sister were more practical and knew it was the best decision. “I remember the inside of the car and seeing the matron on the steps of the orphanage and that’s when my life started because that’s my first memory.” Royce says he had his own group or family in the orphanage where they called themselves ‘The Homeys’. Royce says his siblings visited on a weekly roster so he was never abandoned. His passion came when he used to work on various dairy farms over Christmas.
“To the orphanage’s credit, they liked to get the kids out for Christmas so I used to work on dairy farms. “I thought I was made, the cookie jars were full, I’d milk the cows and have the place to myself.” Royce then became a vet, a tradeoff between his father’s desire for his son to be a doctor and Royce’s love of animals. “I think I picked cows over humans because I liked them more.” After six years as a vet, largely with horses, he began his work in microbiology and dabbling in cleaning up the dairy industry and working with the then Ministry of Fisheries. He also helped the World Health
Organisation with its food export regulations and even had an audience with the Pope. Royce says he is anti-establishment and liked to be part of the change. He has survived a quadruple bypass, has lost “a fair bit” of his colon, several hip operations and type two diabetes. “I wouldn’t say I’m a survivor, I’m more of a meddler,” Royce says. “Because I always had my family and friends within the orphanage I feel like I was given many advantages some children who grow up without their biological family don’t have.” Contact katehutt@hotmail.com to order a copy of the book.

Southern Katipo begins this week By Jacob Page More than 2000 military personnel from New Zealand and eight other countries will take part in a month-long international exercise hosted by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) starting this week in Marlborough and the top of the South Island. Exercise Southern Katipo 15 (SK15) aims to test and evaluate the New Zealand Defence Force’s (NZDF) ability to plan and conduct joint operations involving a range of naval, land, and air assets. It also involves military personnel from Australia, Canada, Fiji, France, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and the United States. “Unlike previous iterations of this exercise, we are treating SK15 as one of several operations that we manage and supervise,” says Major General Tim Gall, Commander Joint Forces New Zealand. “This approach is more realistic

An 80th birthday celebration
On Friday evening the Nelson / Ma rlborough branch of the Crippled Children Society (CCS), now known as the CCS Disability Action Nelson/ Marlborough celebrated their 80th birthday. National chief executive David Matthews was on hand to be part of the celebrations in the Wesley Centre complex. He spoke to a large audience about some people not getting adequate support to move into the world of work, education and training. It was about the simple things and getting a fair go. With more than 16
branches in NZ, the organisation supports more than 5000 people of all ages with different disabilities. The Blenheim branch was set up in 1935 with the Marlborough Rotary Club the major mover. Local employers spoke about the value of having CCS employees and the contribution they made to their work places. Rodger Cullen from Placemakers says the support from the local committee, the calibre of employee and the enthusiasm that Tamati Matene brings to the job and his dealing with the public are excellent.
“Tamati will have the opportunity to be a fully fledged member of my team in years to come Rodger says. Vinnie Redwood from Omega Seafoods was also enthusiastic with his praise and appreciation to CCS, saying at times it is a humbling experience working with CCS and particularly Owen Haynes. He is always early for work and one of the last to leave and a hard worker. Figures of Diversity, small pottery figures were on sale at the birthday, created by Marlborough people. The idea was thought up by Fran Maguire a
Marlborough potter and based on British sculptor Sir Anthony Gormley. Wendy Coutts QSM cut the 80th birthday cake. Wendy has spent more
than thirty years with CCS, holding various positions on the national association and still involved with the local committee today.

Fun day and auction for new classroom Preparations are well under way for the Linkwater School’s 12th annual Fine art auction and Funday being held at Labour Weekend. (Saturday 24 October at 5pm and Funday on Sunday). Twenty-two artists have contributed to a collection of 40 lots with a wide variety of media including paintings, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, and wood work. In addition to the artist’s work, the students have produced three collaborative art works under the expert tuition of local artist Sue Hayde. This year the theme is centered
around water with local scenes from surrounding landscapes in the Grove/Anakiwa areas. The auction is a humming event, with wine sponsored by Yealands Estate and delicious nibbles from NZ salmon, Fonterra and local cheese makers Cranky Goat. Linkwater School also runs their famous Funday the following Sunday 25 October. This is a fun day out for the whole family. The all day cafe is packed with home made baking and excellent coffee from Jumea, as well as a BBQ stall with garlic mussels and bacon butties. The silent auction was a particular
hit last year with some fantastic donations from businesses all over the country, and some real bargains to be had. The event is also famous for its plant stall and perfectly timed to get your plants in at Labour Weekend. Plant growers have been busy for months growing a wide variety of plants including the always popular basil. A huge variety of entertainment is available including chocolate wheel, games, races, bouncy castle, Titanic, and this year, Paint Ball. The money raised from these two annual events goes towards the running of a third classroom for the year 3-5 students.

Norm Fowke Glass Hooning endorsement Dear Ed, While on the subject of drivers licences, can someone tell me how I get an endorsement on my license for hooning? Because it seems to me that many residents of Blenheim must have this endorsement. On many occasions I hear the squeal of lost traction and vehicles with growling exhausts hooning around the neighbourhood. Are there any restrictions on this hooning endorsement would you know, is there any special test you must take? From my observations this hooning endorsement allows all manner of antisocial and dangerous activity to occur with little police enforcement of road laws. Traffic enforcement Dear Ed, The two letters one by “Ex-policeman Pete” and the other with no name on traffic law enforcement miss the point. The issue to me is the attitude in other words the culture by a few officers. I was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. I was honest and admitted being remiss. What I found inexcusable was the rude and abrupt manner by officer 40, to both me and my wife. On the other hand two other instances with two different officers resulted in a friendly warning which I appreciated. Great PR! The rude manner of officer 40 was bad public relations for the police.

But “Ex policeman Pete” showed hints of the same rude culture (absurdity?) when he said “regards the tail light not working, technically her vehicle was not up to WOF standard.” C’mon Pete take a tranquiliser. Does “Pete” test his lights every time before he gets in his car? I hope he does from now on. But I’m not sure how you’d test your brake lights if you’re heading out on your own. It is a matter of being reasonable, understanding and polite particular since the police are no different to any public servant. The public pay their salaries. F.A.

Blue cod quotas Dear Ed, What a cracker letter by Bill Benfield of the Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations about the blue cod situation. He raises a mighty good point about the cut in recreational bag limit for Challenger East but no cut in commercial quota. When you think about it, it’s been happening over the years. The recreational public have had a number of cuts from 10 to six to three to two from memory. There has been no reduction in commercial quota. What this means in effect, is the recreational catch is being handed over to commercial. It’s great the slot and transit rules have gone but gosh it took so long. Only pressure by groups such as the Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association forced government to do something. I must look at joining the MRFA. Good job done chaps. Will the Minister deal with the ministry idiot(s) who brought the slot rule in. It killed thousands of cod. The idiot(s) should be sacked. “Angler” father

Green MP looks on bright side of climate change This year marks a groundswell of awareness of climate change, Green Party MP Gareth Hughes told an audience of around 50 people at the Wesley Centre in Blenheim on Monday evening. Hughes is optimistic that this global awareness will drive agreements at the 21st United Nations conference on Climate Change which opens in Paris on November 30. Two days earlier, people in Blenheim will gather at Seymour Square, joining a worldwide march for climate justice. The 33-year-old Green spokesperson for energy and resources says since he was four, the globe has not known a below average monthly temperature. “This affects the things we care about,” he says. In Marlborough, the mussel industry -
worth $200 million to the New Zealand economy - was threatened by carbon dioxide-driven ocean acidification causing mussel shells to soften, Hughes says. Drought was predicted to intensify. A warmer climate would risk human health, creating more favourable conditions for parasites and tropical vector-borne diseases like Dengue fever carried by mosquitoes. Hughes also pointed to positive trends including a 99 per cent drop in the cost of the silicon photovoltaic cells used in solar panels during his lifetime, 30 per cent in the last two years. Councillors will have the final say as establishing a funding stream through rates would have to be considered as part of the 2016-17 Annual Plan process which gets underway early in the new year. Council currently does not have a view on the proposal but has agreed to facilitate the voting process. Early next month, the Blenheim Business Association will be holding a meeting for all property owners and occupiers who are inside the proposed BID area in order to answer questions about the proposal and the voting process. Any property owner or occupier who does not receive a voting paper by October 29 should contact the District Council’s Strategic Planning and Economic Development manager Neil Henry.

Business improvement poll coming Online voting will be available for the first time in Marlborough when local CBD businesses get to voice their view on the establishment of a Business Improvement District to represent their interests. The Blenheim Business Association is proposing the Business Improvement District (BID) model, used in some other parts of the country, be established here, funded through a new rate on those inside the BID boundary. The Council would collect the rate on behalf of the BID but the BID would have responsibility for deciding how those funds would be spent on CBD promotion and improvement. A poll, to assess the level of interest in the concept, will be conducted between Monday 26 October and Wednesday 18 November with the option of either traditional postal voting or on-line voting available. The results of the poll will not be binding but they will give the Business Association

Family ties to theatre The third generation of a Marlborough family is supporting the new theatre project because of the benefits it will have for the region. Rob Anderson has made a “substantial” contribution to the new ASB Civic Theatre, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Frank (“FL”) Anderson, 40 years ago. Frank’s son Ross Anderson is the fundraising manager for the theatre project but Rob says his uncle didn’t need to twist his arm to pledge support. “This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Marlborough,” he says. “The broader benefits to the wider community made me stop and think how I wanted to be involved and to contribute.” Rob Anderson grew up in Marlborough and went to Nelson College and Victoria University before going into the IT industry, first in the banking sector and then setting up his own enterprises. He has been based back in Blenheim since the late 1990s and has strong ideas on how the new theatre will make the region more attractive. “Facilities like the stadium, the pool and Lansdowne Park are all important parts of the cultural and sporting mix that people look at when they are deciding whether to bring their family here. The theatre will be a strong component to make Marlborough an attractive place to live, which will also create jobs and encourage people to set up businesses.” He won’t put a figure on his contribution, but it is big enough that the Theatre Trust has offered him the naming rights to the 200-seat studio theatre that is part of the new complex. He is considering something as simple as the Anderson Theatre, to recognise the whole family’s contribution over the years. His grandfather’s major contribution to the existing theatre is still recognised by a plaque in the Wisheart Room. That room was originally an upstairs cafe for shoppers and the sign sits above what

was the entrance to the “FL Anderson Shopping Precinct” – the supermarket in the space now leased by Noel Leeming and the new Health Hub. Ross Anderson also started his career in banking and had just returned to be accountant at the family sawmill business in the mid-1970s when his father agreed to contribute to a new theatre. The existing theatre had been pulled down as an earthquake risk and the only place in town any good to put on a show was the Marlborough Boys’ College. Frank Anderson agreed to match the contribution from building supply merchant George Martin, even without knowing how much it was. His eyes watered a little when he was told Mr Martin had pledged $25,000, but he was good to his promise and between them the two men contributed a sum equivalent today to almost $500,000. Shortly after, Frank Anderson was persuaded to make a similar contribution to the development of Brayshaw Park, so
George Martin’s generous contribution to the theatre turned out doubly expensive for Frank. Ross says that was the way his father operated, an attitude that has continued in following generations. “The new theatre was a civic project and Dad felt it was important to support those things.” History was repeated in a way about five years ago when the Theatre Trust approached Ross to be the fundraising manager for the latest project, which is due to open in February. “They had approached a professional company which was going to charge an excessive amount, and then wouldn’t guarantee to reach a target.” While Ross has also made a hefty donation – “You can’t ask other people for money if you haven’t given any yourself” – the major part of his contribution has been hours of work, coming up with sponsorship ideas and twisting arms. And so the Anderson name will sit on the

next iteration of the Civic Theatre, possibly for several more generations to come. As both Ross and Rob say, this is a project that had to go ahead for the community and it was the right thing for them to be involved.

Hands-on learning opens doors The Top of the South Trades Academy (TOTSTA) is opening doors to students who want to stay at school but are ready to start training for a real job. The Trades Academy is a partnership between schools throughout the top of the south region, NMIT and Whenua Iti Outdoors. Students remain at school completing NCEA, while at the same time working towards a National Certificate in a trade of their choice, earning Level 2 credits as part of their trades programme. Trades Academy training is practical and hands-on and there are over 15 programme areas to choose from. Students can learn anything from automotive engineering and aquaculture to hairdressing and hospitality. The best part about the Trades Academy is that it’s free. Training takes place one day a week at one of NMIT’s campuses in Richmond, Nelson or Blenheim, or through multi day residential blocks at Whenua Iti Outdoors. All funds raised from Red Rose Day go into sustaining the services that Red Cross provides in Marlborough including Meals on Wheels, the response team, a gardening project, wheel chair hire and a community visiting service. Business fuels schools Mayfield School receives laptops from Southfuels Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Mayfield School has received two Chromebook laptops thanks to the Fuel for Schools sponsorship programme. Principal David Nott met with Southfuels account manager John Eales and Waikawa Fishing Company director Geoff Connor last week to receive the laptops which David says will add to the students access to devices in the classroom. Mayfield School was nominated for the sponsorship programme by Geoff and his wife Liz who have been customers of Southfuels for eight years through their fishing company. Liz had completed a block of teacher training at the school and had ‘fallen in love’ with the students, so when the opportunity came to nominate a school, they jumped at the chance to help Mayfield School. “She was sad to leave them once she had finished. She came home with letters from the kids and was really touched by her time there, so it’s a real pleasure to be here today to see the laptops donated,” Geoff says. For David, he says support like this helps to take the ‘sting’ out of the budget. “It’s fantastic. We are able to keep adding to our devices for the kids and at the same time it gives us the opportunity to try new technology.

Customers can participate by nominating a participating school who will receive 50 cents for every 100 Litres of bulk fuel purchased, and once accrued when a participating school reaches $1000 they can choose to redeem a technology or sports equipment package.
Blue cod changes welcomed but with reservations Recreational fishing groups have welcomed the removal of unpopular blue cod fishing rules around the slot size band and transiting fish from the outer Sounds to Picton and Havelock. President Marlborough Recreational Fishers Assn., Peter Watson describes as ‘pleasing’ that the fruition of many years campaigning for fairness within the blue cod fishery became a reality “It has been the collective voice all working towards the same goals these past seven years that eventually won the day,” he says.
He says the minister’s announcement was, however not perfect but had headed in the right direction. “The unfairness over recreational set netting was an issue that needed urgent attention.” Other groups welcomed the new rules due on December 29 when the Sounds are reopened to recreational fishing. Immediate past president NZ Sport Fishing Council Mark Connor said the removal of the slot and transit rules was ‘great news.’ However there still remained
areas of deep concern such as the reduction in the recreational bag limit for Tasman and Golden Bays and east Marlborough with no matching reduction in the commercial quota of 70 tonnes. His views were supported by NZ First fisheries spokesman Richard Prosser who says inequalities still remained. “It’s a matter of equality, fairness and principle that fisheries management measures should be shared, for example, a reduction in recreational bag limits should be matched by a reduction in commercial quotas,” he says.
Legasea’s Trish Rea says there were some positive outcomes in the abolition of the slot and transit rules but it was of concern that the 70 tonne commercial catch remained intact and not reduced by the same percentage as the cut in recreational bag limit for the wider Challenger zone. “Once again recreational fishers have borne the brunt of management changes. The Minister must start making more balanced decisions for the sake of the fishery and local’s interests,” she says.

Journey through time for senior groovers More than 140 senior citizens met for the seventh annual Seniors Dance which was held at the Clubs of Marlborough. The theme this year was the “Victory Dance, A Step In Time”. The venue was alive with black and red poppies and balloons. Attendees were entertained by a combination of Janet’s Old Time Band and the Orphans Band. There was a lot of reminiscing with old favourite songs and dances from that era.

Our Blenheim Laboratory has a Phlebotomy vacancy of 40 hours per fortnight starting in January and finishing July 2016. This is to cover maternity leave. Previous Phlebotomy experience is desirable to ensure a high quality service is provided at all times. It is preferred that applicants hold a Qualified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate (QPT) certificate or are prepared to work towards obtaining this qualification. Full training may be given to an individual with a suitable background and personal attributes. Makos season over
More than 350 competitors race off the start line at the Marlborough Kids Duathlon, on Sunday.
Duathlon gives a taste of competition By Jacob Page The New World Blenheim Marlborough Kids Duathlon saw 365 children have a taste of athletic endeavour without the pressure of the time clock. The Brancott Estate Winery hosted the event on Sunday morning with all competitors eligible for more than 150 spot prizes on the day. Two courses were used depending on age and skill-level. Course one had a 1km run, a
3km bike ride finished with a 1km run. The second course started with a 2km run, a 5.5km bike ride and a 1km sprint to the finish. Committee member Jenny Maclean said the event was a huge success even if some parents had half an eye on the All Blacks versus France Rugby World Cup quarterfinal which occurred at the same time. “There were plenty of kids
giving duathlon a go for the first time which was really pleasing. The major spot prize of a Scott 640 26” hardtail mountain bike plus Razor Helmet went to Lafai King from Havelock School. The second major prize of a $250 Interislander voucher was won by Carly Craig from St Marys School and the third prize of a $150 New World Blenheim voucher went to Sebastian Ward-Kelly.

Falcons win again
The Nelson Marlborough Falcons ran out 3-0 winners over Heartland Wairarapa in their football clash at Nelson’s Guppy Park on Sunday. Omar Guardiola scored twice in the win as the side recorded its second win in three games.

Speedway season to begin The Eastern States Speedway 2015/2016 season will be opening on October 24. Running will be the home classes of stockcars, saloons, productions, streetstocks and youth ministocks. One
highlight of the opening night will be the inclusion of a rally car class. The club also welcomes interest from anyone wanting to become a track volunteer, simply ask for volunteer coordinator Maryellen Robinson.
The Tasman Makos ITM Cup campaign came to a halt with a 44-24 semi-final loss to Auckland at Eden Park, on Friday night. The result also meant the end of Kieran Keane’s six season’s in charge of the team. He now heads to the Chiefs in an assistant role while the Makos will be coached in 2016 by current assistant Leon MacDonald and Mark Hammett.
by Jacob Page Uso Fiafia have been crowned Marlborough senior volleyball champions after a dominant victory over Pure Samoa in the Final at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. A polished start by Uso Fiafia gave no chance for Pure Samoa to get into the opening set and they ran away with it 25-7. Pure Samoa were missing some of their regular players but they came back in set
two and were in the hunt with two fightbacks from several points down. However, Uso hung in for another win 25-17. Uso then powered on in the third set with some very big spikes from Afa Lauvai and young Lotu played well coming on in set three. Eseta Taylor had a great game for Pure Samoa especially on defence and Willie also played well. The last set score was 25-13 to Uso Fiafia.
Marching for a new season Renwick’s Cordeaux marching team began the season by taking part in Sunday’s official opening, attended by Marlborough Marching patron Jenny Andrews. Shirley wins Timaru race The Blenheim Racing Pigeon club members entered their birds into another competition against pigeons from clubs throughout the lower North Island from Timaru on Saturday. The very changeable weather and gusting winds made a challenging journey home for the birds over the 400 km course. A very good win to Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek, her pigeon averaging 82.6 km/h, a good time in adverse conditions. Second was Alister Cooper of Renwick at 79.2 km/h and third to Shirley’s husband Donald, with 77.5 km/h. Next was Sindy Kirkwood at 77.4 km/h then Carl Kirkwood at 76.4 km/h,Two Fishers loft doing 75.3 km/h, followed by Chris Bensley 70.8 km/h and Nero lofts 66.4 km/h.
